This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love. Thinking back to that turning-point Sunday at Christ Church, she recalls that people seemed relieved to share their stories.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God, he said; there is grace and hope for those who die from suicide. It has helped one member establish a nonprofit residential mental health center and another launch a one-woman crusade to educate people about bipolar disorder. It has hosted two appearances by bestselling author Brené Brown to share her message that asking for help is a sign of strength. In addition to the SOS group, the church has invested in mental health support and awareness in a number of ways.

A tenured music historian and writer, David’s love of music led him to develop a meaningful relationship with The Beach Boys, curating and reporting on their history for over 30 years. In 2021 he reunited The Beach Boys and their children when co-producing a re-recording of the group’s 1970 recording “Add Some Music to Your Day” with an accompanying music video that he directed to benefit Feeding America. David brings the same passion and commitment to his administrative role at Christ Church.

In the 1700s and early 1800s, Quakers opened rural “retreats” for the mentally ill — forerunners of psychiatric hospitals. Six weeks before his death, he suffered a football-related concussion, which caused daily headaches. He had to step away from football, and he missed three weeks of school, further fraying his social network. In 2019, the church created the SOS group, which meets twice a month for an hour and a half, longer if necessary. The half-dozen families involved politely declined a reporter’s request to sit in, asking for privacy. While the initiatives are focused on the congregation, the community is welcome to attend the classes and programs.

“It was like a huge pressure valve was released and people could breathe when talking about mental illness,” she said. The experience emboldened Purdy to share her story at churches, mental health seminars — wherever she could. She launched her ministry as a speaker and advocate for mental health at Christ Church.

Life matters

She is married to Tim Saunders, a retired pediatric and neuro-ophthalmologist. They enjoy biking, travel, reading, movies and spending time with children and grandchildren. We are a Christ-centered Episcopal church rooted in scripture, tradition and reason; respectful of and strengthened by our differences.

Progress is underway as we build on our priorities to cultivate faith, foster connections, and promote the well-being of everyone in our parish and the city beyond.

Worship

Our commitment to racial justice and reconciliation was strengthened as we witnessed the pain of our sisters and brothers of color. Jesus is our savior, but we were also saved by technology this year! Christ Church is currently offering one online service of prayer, hymns and a sermon, each Sunday at 9 a.m. Church leaders describe the new position as a ministry of presence, charged with addressing the array of issues that contribute to a person’s health — mental and otherwise. Today, the church refers families to HopeWay, and the facility’s medical staff has spoken at the church. The congregation has supported HopeWay financially, Blue said — including a grant to bring in Theo, a therapy dog.

Parishioners rose to tell their stories, not just about financial woes, but about their spiritual and emotional well-being — or lack of it. “God cares about human suffering and calls us to attend to those who suffer,” he said. Rite II – Uses modern language but retains the beautiful imagery of Rite I with more prayer options. Rite I – Uses Elizabethan English (i.e. thee, thy, thou) and hearkens back to the rich language of Thomas Cranmer, the original prayer book creator. Suzanne teaches in large and small group settings including bible studies, discussion groups, and Faith Forum conversations, retreats, and pilgrimages. Joan received her Masters of Divinity degree from the University of the South School of Theology at Sewanee. She has extensive experience in parish ministry, previously serving as the Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesboro, Georgia.

Despite its growing support of mental health, the congregation was shocked by the rash of suicides. Among the dead was a 20-year-old college student, a 51-year-old businessman and father of two who was active in the church, and the Kocmonds’ son Nathan. As Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson teaches, preaches, and serves as a resource for the clergy and spiritual formation teams to foster deeper spiritual growth across the whole parish.

Our other sacramental rites are Confirmation, Ordination, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation of the Penitent and Unction. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church.

The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. OUR MISSIONTo engage, equip and empower people to love God, care for each other and serve the world in the name of Christ. Raised on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Connor discerned a call to the priesthood while in college and attended seminary upon graduation. He has previously served as a School Chaplain and on a Diocesan staff. Connor is a poet and writer whose work has been published in a variety of places including The Mockingbird. After a year of pre-recorded worship services broadcast on Sundays, in April 2021 we began reopening the doors for Sunday worship in person by registration, with live broadcasting from the sanctuary.

– Contemplative Holy Eucharist (Church)This service of Holy Eucharist has contemporary language and an emphasis on contemplative space and music. Lauren completed her Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Florida State University in 2015 and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2019 with her Master of Music in Opera Theater. Until July of 1887, the church was without stove, chancel furniture and window glass. The church was consecrated on July 28, 1887 during which a number of clergy participated, as the Convocation of Charlotte was in session. On July 24, 1887 seventeen persons were confirmed at the church’s first Confirmation service. In 1891, the name of the church was changed from “Church of the Holy Comforter” to Christ Church. The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive grace. The two great sacraments are Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.
